We are excited to welcome Katherine Dauge-Roth of Bowdoin College for a virtual reading group, discussing her new book Signing the Body: Marks on Skin in Early Modern France. If you would like to join, sign up on Eventbrite here, or email renaissanceskin@kcl.ac.uk.
Signing the Body is the first scholarly monograph to address the rich history of the marked body in the early modern period. Drawing together a wide range of sources, it investigates tattooing, marking and other signs on skin in areas as diverse as demonology, jurisprudence, mysticism, medicine, pilgrimage, commerce, travel, and colonial conquest. In our virtual reading group, we will be focusing in particular on pilgrim tattoos. We will circulate the relevant chapters in advance.
